What’s the reason why?

I want to follow on a bit from what we talked about yesterday. Oftentimes people have a hard time figuring out what they really want in life and, similarly, what’s preventing them from getting it.

Have a think about your life. What’s holding you back?

A good way to answer that question is to use the “5 Whys Technique”. This is where you delve deep and ask yourself for the reason why five times in a row. This can sometimes uncover hidden reasons for why you do things that you may not be aware of.

Let me give you an example.

Let’s say you want to lose weight. You’ve tried all sorts of diets, but you just can’t seem to shift the pounds.
Why is that? (1st why)
Because you’re comfort eating.
Why do you do that? (2nd why)
Because you and your spouse are arguing all the time.
Why? (3rd why)
Because he/she wants to live in a better neighborhood.
Why can’t you move? (4th why)
Because we can’t afford to live anywhere else.
Why is that? (5th why).
Because you keep getting passed over for promotion at work and don’t make enough money.

So you see the real problem is not a weight problem but a work related one!

Now use the 5 why’s technique to understand why you’re not making progress at work.

OK, so this is a fairly simplistic example, but it works. Apply the technique to your own situation, and prepare to be surprised.
